Skin Effect in Single-Core Cables
When a conductor carries alternating current or an alternating electromagnetic field, the current distribution inside the conductor is uneven. The current concentrates in the conductor's "skin," meaning it's concentrated in a thin outer layer. The closer to the surface, the higher the current density, while the current inside the conductor is relatively small. This increases the conductor's resistance and thus its power loss. This phenomenon is called the skin effect. Single-core cables exhibit a significant skin effect under alternating current or electromagnetic fields, leading to increased line losses.
Advantages of Multi-Core Cables
Multi-core cables, which have more than one insulated core, reduce the skin effect, thereby lowering line losses.
